How to Start an Ice Cream Stick Factory: The Log Preparation Stage

Most guides to starting an ice cream stick factory begin at the veneer peeler and work forward through punching, polishing and drying. That is the visible half of the line. The half that decides your reject rate happens earlier, in the log yard — and it is the half new factories consistently under-invest in.

What machines does an ice cream stick line need?

An ice cream stick line has two stages, usually bought from different suppliers. The log preparation stage turns raw logs into clean, precisely sized billets: a debarker to remove bark, a log deck feeder to move logs one at a time, and a cut-off saw to crosscut them to the length your peeler accepts. The stick production stage turns those billets into finished product: rotary veneer peeling, punching, polishing, drying, sorting and packing. Getting preparation right matters disproportionately, because every millimetre of error and every scrap of remaining bark is multiplied across the thousands of sticks cut from each log.

Why does debarking come first?

Bark is abrasive, it traps grit and sand, and it contaminates the veneer. Sand embedded in bark dulls a peeling knife in a fraction of its normal service life, and any bark fragment reaching the punching stage becomes a rejected stick.

The wood log debarker LW-DB30 is a drum-type machine handling logs 10–30 cm in diameter and 1–5 m long — the range most stick factories work in. Four 65Mn steel knives strip to about 98% clean at 2 m per minute. Two details matter in practice. It accepts bent logs, which counts for a lot because plantation wood is rarely straight and a machine that only takes straight stock will reject a large share of your intake. And knife service runs roughly 36 months with a 30-minute change, so it is not a machine that keeps interrupting production.

What cutting accuracy does a stick blank need?

More than most buyers expect. Ice cream sticks, tongue depressors, coffee stirrers and disposable cutlery are high-volume, tight-tolerance products. A blank that is out of spec does not become a lower-grade product — it becomes waste.

For a dedicated stick factory cutting one length year-round, the fixed model is usually right — and it accepts up to six saw heads, so a single pass produces several finished billets at once. Factories that also sell board or dimension timber are better served by the adjustable model. The precision model suits producers whose lengths sit inside a one-metre band but need fine adjustment within it.

All three run at 60–90 logs per hour on Ø20 cm pine, use standard market blades, and change a blade in about five minutes.

What wood species work?

The industry runs on soft, straight-grained, odourless, light-coloured wood:

  • Rubber wood — dominant in Thailand and Malaysia, and a by-product of replanting old plantations, so supply is steady and inexpensive
  • Birch and poplar — the traditional choice in Russia and Eastern Europe
  • Fast-growing plantation species in Vietnam, which built a substantial stick export industry on exactly this material

What matters more than species is consistency of diameter. A line fed 15–25 cm logs runs steadily; a line fed anything from 10 to 45 cm spends its day being adjusted.

How many workers does the preparation stage need?

Fewer than most people plan for, if the machines are connected properly. A log deck feeder buffers 20–30 logs and delivers them one at a time at around 10 per minute. Because the feeder bolts directly to the saw and shares its control cabinet, one operator runs feeder and saw together. Add one person on the debarker and the whole preparation stage runs with two people.

The alternative — workers lifting logs onto a saw table by hand — is not just slower. It is the most common source of injury in a stick factory, and it puts a person’s hands near a 1200 mm blade all day.

What should you ask a supplier before ordering?

  1. What voltage will it be built for? It should be built for your supply, not adapted on arrival. We build 220 V, 380 V and 415 V at 50 or 60 Hz, specified at order time.
  2. Are the blades standard? Non-standard blades mean buying from one supplier forever.
  3. Can the feeder and saw share a control cabinet? If not, you need a second operator.
  4. Can I watch this machine run before it ships? We record a test run of your specific machine before it goes into the container.
